WMP Events & Key Achievements 2013

Events:

RBG Kew, Flora Locale and WMP – Seed Collecting & Use for restoration and re-introduction 11th July 2013

The day course reviewed the science and practice of collecting, preservation and use of high quality seed samples.  Using semi-natural habitats at Wakehurst seed was harvested and quality-assessed by the 12 attending officers and individuals at the Millennium Seed Bank laboratories.  After lunch, grassland enhancement techniques and initial results were demonstrated and discussed in practice with support from WMP in Bloomers Valley.

Achievements:

  • In spring 2013 – 104 unimproved grassland SNCIs in the High Weald AONB were reviewed and this resulted in 95 sites ownership information and management status being updated – read more in the High Weald AONB SNCI Grassland Report
  • In summer 2013 – 100 meadows were reviewed (with many visited) for a national inventory amounting to support, or information for 525ha of grassland. We would like to acknowledge the generous support from the Sussex Community Foundation

  • 16ha of unimproved wildflower meadow were wild seed harvested for Weald Native Origin Seed (WNOS)
  • WMP & Services helped secure funding for a new meadow enhancement due to take place in three counties East Sussex, West Sussex and Surrey in 2014.
